History of the French Ligue 1

The French Ligue 1 used to be called simply Division 1. Men’s professional football in France was legalized back in 1930. Two years later in 1932, the original Division 1 was created. It was not until 2002 that the French Football Association decided to change the name of their top professional league to Ligue 1 which it is called today.
France was a little late to the professional football party. There has been interest in football for many years dating back until the 1890s. It became popular in the capital, Paris, and soon afterwards started to gain popularity in other regions of the country. A national football competition did take place in Paris in 1894.
There were 20 teams involved in the very first Division 1 league back in 1932. This has not changed over the years and today there are 20 teams in the French Ligue 1. Up until 2006, the winning team of the top flight in France received a trophy known as “le Trophee de Ligue 1” but this was replaced with the Pablo Reinoso designed trophy which is a hexagonal shape in 2007.
There are five professional football league levels in France. Ligue 1 is the top league and this is followed by the second-tier Ligue 2. The third-tier league is the Championnat National, the fourth-tier is the Championnat National 2 and the fifth-tier is the Championnat National 3. Below this are regional amateur and semi-professional leagues.
The teams that finish in the top 3 positions qualify for the Champions League, with the third placed team going into the qualifiers. A Europa league place is awarded to the team that finishes 4th. France has 2 domestic cup competitions which are the Coupe de la Ligue and the Coupe de France and the winners of these qualify for the Europa League as well.
There is a relegation play off scenario for teams at the bottom of Ligue 1 and at the top of Ligue 2. The bottom 2 teams in Ligue 1 are automatically relegated and the top 2 teams in Ligue 2 are automatically promoted. A play off then takes place between the team finishing 3rd from bottom of Ligue 1 and the team 3rd from top of Ligue 2.

Interesting facts about the Ligue 1 in France

Saint-Etienne and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have won the most top flight league titles (this includes the old Division 1 and the current Ligue 1). Both of these teams have won 10 titles each. Other successful teams include Olympique de Marseille with 9 titles, Nantes and Monaco with 8 each and Olympique Lyonnais with 7.
In more recent years, the French Ligue 1 has been dominated by PSG who have won the most titles under the current name. But there was a shock in the 2020 – 2021 season when Lille won their fourth title. You might think that PSG has the largest stadium but it doesn’t. The biggest football stadium in Ligue 1 is the Orange Velodrome which is home to Marseille.
Some of the world’s top professional footballers have played in Ligue 1. Among the famous French players are Eric Cantona, Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry and Kylian Mbappe. Famous foreign players include Zlatan Ibrohimavic, Lionel Messi, Edinson Cavani and Neymar.
